Lay-up is a simple open-moulding method to process composite materials.

Process Description

Pre-impregnated fabrics are laid-up onto the tool cavity. Depending on the mechanical properties desired, there are various curing technologies: vaccum bagged, autoclave (a pressurised oven which reduces part porosity). Prepreg fabrics are compressed via the vaccum bag or a male mould. In this case, the tool temperature can be controlled and therefore not to use the autoclave. The parts have excellent mechanical properties due to high fibre content (45 to 50%) and the fibre orientation is controlled.
